Battle for Illikar Valley by Earl-Graey Battle for Illikar Valley by Earl-Graey
**NOTICE! Fullview/Download for all the teensy details! Just don't steal it...(image is pretty big though, you have been warned)**

I have been working on this thing on and off for about 2 months now, and I finally feel as if there isn't too much more I can do to it (yet... heheh). This was meant to be a bit of a digital painting boot-camp, and I definitely learned a lot while doing it... at this point I am just glad to be done with it.

Image concept is from a piece of background history for a science fiction rpg I have been running for some friends, and shows the opening moments of a battle that ends up spanning several weeks and decides the fate of the Insectoid race's homeworld. As to what exactly that is... I'll let you try to figure it out. :P

Background is all on one layer, with figures and effects on their own layers respectively. About 30+ hrs (longer than it should have taken..) in PS CS5 with a Bamboo Fun Tablet.

If there are any glaring (or not so much) errors, tell me! It is very possible that I missed some, and I want this thing to look solid.

As you've already said, the designs look very 40k-esque, but IMO, the soldiers look much better than normal Tau.

big 40k fan. Grunts look like Tau which is awesome. Looks like some of the bugs' guns were inspired by necrons?

Definitely some inspiration in there as a fellow 40k fan. The grunts were originally based more on a theme of geometric sections of armor, but they ended up with a bit of a firewarrior vibe. The Bugs guns were supposed to be powered by an energy crystal type substance that one of the co-creators came up with, and the only criteria was beam weapon and Green, so they turned out pretty close to gauss weapons... lol

Man, oh man. This was surely a labor of love. And downloading it is a must! The amount of detail packed into this blows my mind. I am especially fond of the textures you painted on the trees and rocks, along with the tidbits of bright green against all the muted tones that make up most of the scene--to me that helps emphasize the sort of clash of sci-fi/other worldly technology against a familiar natural setting that's going on this picture. You did a fantastic job with this. It's work like this that makes me feel honored to go to school with people like you!

Wow, coming from a detail fiend like yourself that is quite the complement! Many thanks :salute:

Glad that the realistic sci-fi feel came across in some fasion, is tricky to go for...

This is great, really quite a big, and detailed piece. Very cool to see so much detail in the full view.

Daayuumm this turned out good!! The only thing I might suggest is playing with blurring the stuff that's not directly in the foreground. Also, doing a layer set to color or overlay and giving the image different "tints" would make it look a little more natural, i think. Overall, though, freakin' awesome.

Ah, will have to try that overlay thing. The somewhat monochromatic feel this has was bugging me... sounds like a good fix
